"on the go" block for the 2017 row by row experience

"on the go" block for the 2017 row by row experience

On the Go Row by Row by Salty Oat

For the second year in a row, I designed the free Row by Row Experience pattern for Pintuck & Purl, a yarn and fabric shop in Exeter, NH. (You can learn all about Row by Row here.) For this year's theme of "On the Go," I designed this block featuring two rows of hand-appliquéd tires with Liberty of London rims.

Since each tire and rim are hand sewn to individual blocks, the row is super portable and perfect for tucking into your carry-on or beach bag. I did a fun little interview for the Pintuck & Purl blog about the row, its inspiration, and even a bit about my background, in case you'd like to learn more

The only way to get your hands on this pattern is to visit Pintuck & Purl in person between now and September 5. The shop also has a handful of kits available for purchase, which include those yummy bits of Liberty of London Tana Lawn. If you can't make it to the shop this summer, the pattern will be available for purchase through Pintuck & Purl after November 1, 2017.

And if you're itching for more hand-appliqué inspiration and projects, be sure to check out Crazy Mom Quilts' "dot your i's" quilt, Suzy Quilts' free Aria Quilt pattern, and Carolyn Friedlander's book, Savor Each Stitch

a hexagon baby quilt for natalie

Hexagon Baby Quilt by Salty Oat
I have another baby quilt to share with you today! I started this quilt back in 2013, over the Thanksgiving break, while vacationing on the Outer Banks with my family. I love bringing English paper piecing projects with me when I travel, and that trip was no exception. I brought a stack of hexagons with me that I'd made by piecing together solid scraps from my stash.
After I sewed them all together by hand, the hexagon cluster went up on my design wall, where it hung for quite a while. During that time, my dear quilty friend Natalie noticed it and commented on how much she liked it, many times. ;)
So when I found out she was expecting her first baby this March, and knowing I wanted to make her a quilt, I immediately thought this work in progress would be the perfect gift for her.
Hexagon Quilt Detail
For the quilt's top, I hand appliquéd the hexagon shape to a solid navy background. For the back, I raided my stash for lots of colorful prints, which both coordinated with the top and spoke to me as being fabrics Natalie would like: vibrant blues, teals, and pinks.

I even included a bit of leftover piecing from my Fernweh Quilt in the bottom left corner.

I loved putting together this quilt knowing that it would go to a fellow quilter, and I am quite happy to say it was ecstatically received. Now I'm excited for March to come, so that I can snuggle that new baby!

modern sampler quilt along: the final link-up!

modern sampler quilt along: the final link-up!

Modern Sampler Quilt Along with Salty Oat
After more than a year of cutting, piecing, and sewing, we're finally at the end of the quilt along! (You can see all of the individual blocks and read more about the original idea here.) This pattern was by no means simple---12 block templates, 12 appliqué templates and little written instruction---but we made it! Thank you to everyone who stuck with it and completed the pattern.

I'm excited to finally reveal my completed quilt with you! I opted to arrange my blocks in a different layout than the one suggested in the pattern, mainly because I wanted to make sure fabrics were dispersed across the quilt, and not clumped in one area.

After I hand-appliquéd the solid black strips of fabric, I quilted the entire top with a large grid.

I then went back in and added some hand-quilting in the upper left hand corner using black sashiko thread.

The quilt is backed with Carolyn Friedlander's Doe Wide, and machine bound with a graph-paper print I've had for many years.
I'm really happy with how this quilt turned out---it was hard to envision what it would look like while only doing one block each month---and am so glad to have taken this challenge on. Thank you for all following along!

Now is the chance to celebrate you and all of your hard work! I've teamed up with Zakka Workshop and Pintuck & Purl (two awesome New England businesses!) to create a prize pack, which will be awarded to someone who has completed this quilt. Here's what's up for grabs:

To be in the running for this excellent prize pack, please link up to your completed quilt, following the instructions below. The link-up will remain open until next Tuesday, November 1 at 11:59 pm EST. I'll then pull a winner, at random, from all of the entries, and will announce the winner on Wednesday, November 2. I can't wait to see your quilts, and good luck!

UPDATE 11/3/16: A huge congratulations to everyone that finished their Modern Sampler Quilts. The results are amazing! And a special congratulations to Debbie, from A Quilter's Table, whose name was selected at random to receive the prize pack. Thanks again to all that participated!

cultivate blog tour + a new wall quilt

Good morning! Welcome to my stop on the Cultivate Blog Tour, a blog hop celebrating Bonnie Christine's latest fabric collection, Cultivate. I've sewn with Bonnie's fabric and ribbon before (using them in both a lined tote bag and a round zipper pouch), and I must say that the colors and patterns in this latest collection are among my favorites.

In case it's your first time here, welcome! My name is...
